Does your face serum ruin your make up?
Manufacturers of face serums often try to tell us that we have to buy a complete matching set of anti aging products that work together.
Rather than buy a face serum from one company and a moisturizer from another – we really should stick to one brand – theirs! Some makers are more honest.
They know that consumers like to shop around and that letting them do that is a much better way to make the sale.
Personally – I’m much more likely to buy from a brand that doesn’t try to persuade me to use nothing but their products.
Like most peope, I have anti aging products and brands I love and have been using for ages. Tell me to ditch them because they won’t work with a new product and I’m inclined to walk away.
But lately I’m beginning to wonder if there isn’t some truth in what some manufacturers have been telling us.
If you’ve been reading the beauty mags recently you’ll know that anti aging face serums are big. Designed to be applied under your normal moisturizer they lift, tone and refine skin and are packed with high strength anti aging ingredients.
Take the wonderful Skin Medica TNS Regeneration System Kit – the moisturizer and the anti aging serum are sold as a kit and they work perfectly together as they are designed to do. Worth getting because results are much better together than alone.
Not always the case if you mix and match brands though. I see quite a lot of reports in beauty forums and customer reviews that some high spec face serums don’t work very well with the customer’s normal moisturizer.
The result – difficulty in applying make up or peeling and ‘pilling’ of foundation on the skin. Definitely not this season’s best look!
The cause of the problem is likely to be the conflict between the face serum formulation – usually a gel-type base – and the anti aging moisturizer which is often a lotion or a cream.
Of course – it may be nothing to do with the product – it could be it’s the user’s fault. Could be they are simply applying too much face serum in the hope of instant younger looking skin. It’s a common problem according to dermatologists.
Putting on too much wrinkle cream or face serum is a recipe for problems. So – if you want the benefits of an anti aging serum AND a moisturizer under your make up follow the three golden rules.
- Apply the face serum to very dry skin after your toner has fully dried
- Apply tiny dots of face serum all over your face and then blend lightly
- Let the face serum sink into your skin fully so that the surface of the skin no longer feels wet or sticky
Only when your face serum is fully dry – touch dry on your face – should you apply your moisturizer. Let that sink in fully before you apply your foundation.
And it might not be a bad idea to stick to the same brand for your face serum and moisturizer. After all if they don’t work together then at least you can get your money back!
