A topical wrinkle filler is something you may never have thought you needed until recently. In the last few years they have emerged as a hot new anti aging skin care product.
Cosmetic companies were quick to develop topically applied cream wrinkle fillers after products like Restylane and other injectables became very popular.
Given that you probably already use anti wrinkle products on your face – do you need a wrinkle filler and how do they work?
The best wrinkle fillers are light face creams or gels applied to any area of the face to disguise wrinkles on a temporary basis. They can be applied anywhere you want – usually that means to eye wrinkles, forehead, frown lines and around the mouth to cover pucker lines.
Most wrinkle fillers currently on the market work in two ways. Firstly when dabbed on the skin they plump up the skin – much like a conventional anti aging moisturizer does.
The difference is that – unlike a moisturizer – topical fillers usually contain silicone which fills in the line or crease – a bit like filling the cracks in your walls!.
Many wrinkle fillers contain optical pigments – tiny light reflecting particles which bounce light away from the shadow caused by the wrinkle and make them much less visible to the naked eye.
If you want the best wrinkle filler you need to make sure that it contains active anti aging ingredients which provide longer term benefits to your skin. Some products really just do a cosmetic job and don’t offer any anti aging benefits at all whereas something like the Babor wrinkle filler does both. Bear in mind though ithat the level of anti aging ingredients will be lower in a typical filler product than in other anti aging products. A cream wrinkle filler is somewhere between anti aging skin care and a cosmetic.
Applied under make up, wrinkle filler creams should create an ultra smooth, silky and flawless look to the face. Beware though – if you use them as an all over primer for your make up it could work out quite expensive.
Most temporary fillers can also also be used on top of make up to touch up the skin during the day whenever you need younger looking skin quickly.
Most wrinkle fillers won’t deliver the same level of long term anti aging benefits that a really excellent anti aging serum will – so if it’s a choice between the two you’re best to go for the face serum. Of course manufacturers claim that you can use both a face serum and a topical filler but there is a danger of overloading skin with too many products doing different things. There is also the expense factor to consider – all these products cost money and most of us have budgets which can only be stretched so far.
If budget is an issue – limit use of a cream filler to special occasions – a wedding, party, evening out or an important work event – times when you want to look your absolute best.
At these times a topical filler can be a fantastic boost and an essential part of your anti aging tool kit!
