Victoria - Thanks for your question. It is amazing how skin can just completely change around the menopause for women. As you're already doing the right things diet wise then long lasting hydration is the answer. Murad Skin Care do a line called Resurgence which is specifically for hormonally aged skin - well recommended and not way out of line in terms of price. I am a fan of Dr Murad - I think what he says just makes so much sense and he doesn't try to tell you that all you need is his skin care cream - lifestyle matters a lot! His latest book 'The Water Secret' (reviewed in another article on this site) in my opinion nails the issue of hydration and skin. Could be you already know a lot of what's in the book but I found it a bit of a light bulb moment because it brought everything together in a way I hadn't considered before. Let us know how you get on.

Ellen - I know hydroquinone can need more care with African American skin tones as it says in the article but the best thing is to try it and see how your skin responds. The good thing is you have the acne on your back and not your face so it's more hidden. Murad make a skin care range specifically for acne which is highly recommended - I'm not sure if this is hydroquinone or retinol based. Just take things slowly and if you think it's causing problems then stop using it. If you buy from a good online company you should be covered by a return policy and be able to get your money back. Good luck - hope you find a product that works for you1

From the point of peri-menopause and after, I have gone from having almost perfect skin to now having a forehead that consistently feels like sand paper, and what feels to me like an abnormal amount of exfoliation. I am a stress specialist, so I have always eaten well, am right up there on all the newest supplements,etc.... but nothing I seem to do has helped me reverse this dryness. Any ideas??

Beau T - thanks for your suggestions. Many people find that 50 marks a bit of a skin care change. I don't know the anti aging cream you mention but I think it's more likely that the benefit is coming from other anti aging ingredients in this cream rather than the collagen. Unlike retinol - it has been shown that topically applied collagen cannot penetrate the surface layers of the skin to improve the signs of aging. A retinol cream on the other hand - provided you get a good one with the best delivery system and high levels of retinol - should be effective on reducing lines and wrinkles. In the end though - whatever works for you!

One day I woke up with what seems like the worst skin next to an elephant. 50 years old marked a drastic change to a once vibrant, supple, wrinkle free and youthful looking skin.

At this age, products that once worked, all of a sudden seemed to be ineffective. At the advice of skin care specialist they advised that I use a product with collagen. After reading the many positive reviews about the Lady Soma Renewal Serum,I ordered it online and gave it a try. Amazing how quickly this serum works within days I noticed a drastic difference in my skin's appearance and texture.

The brightness and texture of my former years have returned. I'm delighted and proud of the success I've achieved with this product....does the job and works wonders. My skin is beautiful, bright and youthful looking. I highly recommend and good luck!

Sandy - dry and fragile skin gets worse with advanced age and obviously your mother's medication is making it worse. The cheaper hydrating creams - supermarket/drugstore own brand for instance - will cost less to buy but remember the hydrating effect may not last and she may find she has to keep reapplying through the day. The best route is in my view pay a little more for something like the Murad hydrating cream described in the article which you should only need to apply once or twice morning and evening. Return it if not satisfied with the results. One other tip is to look out for a non-perfumed high level moisture cream for eczema which you should be able to buy over the counter. They are often cheaper and will keep skin comfortable by adding hydration. The other tip - take a high strength good quality fish oil capsule to deliver moisture internally to the skin - in my experience that works well. Good luck and I hope you find the right hydrating cream to do the job.

Josephine - thanks for your question - the products described in the article all have good reviews and should help with your neck wrinkles. You can also go to a site like SkincareRX and take a look at the neck creams they recommend. One thing - you need to be diligent - apply the cream to your neck regularly and give it time to show results. Good luck with your search.
